It is about expanding human capacity — and ensuring that leadership leaves a tangible legacy beyond the summit.
FROM THE WORLD’S HIGHEST PEAKS
Saray Khumalo is the first Black African woman to complete the Seven Summits challenge, having climbed the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. She is also the first Black African woman to summit Mount Everest, completing the ascent in 2019 on her fourth attempt, and has skied to the South Pole.
These achievements place her among an elite group of global mountaineers. But for Saray, exploration has never been an end in itself.
The mountains became a platform — a way to test leadership under pressure, confront uncertainty, and demonstrate what sustained commitment looks like when the odds are stacked against you.
EXPLORATION WITH PURPOSE
As Saray’s mountaineering journey evolved, so did her definition of success Rather than collecting summits, she chose to link adventure to impact. Through Summits With a Purpose, Saray has used mountaineering and adventure as a catalyst for social change — mobilising resources, partnerships, and attention to advance education and literacy across Africa.
As of 2025:
16 libraries have been built in South Africa, including physical and digital learning spaces
Thousands of learners now have access to books, technology, and educational opportunity
Each expedition contributes directly to long-term educational infrastructure, not once-off charity
A CONTINENTAL VISION
Saray’s ambition extends far beyond national borders.
Her long-term vision is bold and intentional:
To build at least one library in every country on the African continent.
This vision reflects her belief that:
- Education is the most sustainable form of leadership development
- Access to knowledge changes the trajectory of communities
Leadership must be measured not only by achievement, but by what rises because you did.

The expeditions Saray leads today; whether to mountains, remote landscapes, or reflective natural environments are not about thrill-seeking or endurance tourism.
